Pinon, AZ – We gathered for a N.A.C. (Native American Church) meeting commemorating my mother, known as a Comfort Meeting. She passed away in August of last year from A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. I brought along a few pieces from my Shima’ Collection to wear for the weekend. The collection includes designs inspired by Shima’/ my mother. In our family of jewelers, she made the silver beads and taught me to create her “waves.”
Everyone arrived Friday night and Saturday morning. We prepped my grandparent’s homestead for the Saturday all-night ceremony by cooking and cleaning. Throughout it all we were surrounded by delicious foods, like mutton stew and our aunt’s homemade yeast bread. These photos started while my che’e’ Lyla and I were nibbling on frybread as our masani/ grandma made them… Enjoy!
